Philip and Frannie Leach

Philip Leach is the son of the late Michael Leach and grandson of Bernard Leach. He learnt pottery with his father before travelling to Iran where he taught for six years and, whilst there, also helped to set up student pottery workshops. In 1976 he returned to England and worked for Clive Bowen.

Frannie was brought up in the Bahamas, studied 3-Dimensional Design in England and pottery in New York. She then trained with Michael Leach at his workshop at Yelland near Barnstaple. Philip and Frannie were married in 1977 and established Springfield Pottery in 1979 in Hartland. They have a daughter Emma, and a son Jesse.

They work in earthenware and produce a richly decorated range of oven to tableware, tiles and individual pieces. Their decoration employs a mixture of techniques and the pots are then glazed in one of six of their own glazes.

Frannie works mainly on a range of standard ware and Philip makes more individual pots. They have exhibited widely, including two exhibitions in Japan, but they tend to sell most of their work direct from the pottery. Visitors are welcome all year round.
