Take the Earth and three of its component parts. Add the skill and imagination of four artists, and what do you get? - The Appledore Crafts Company Festival Exhibition.
Animal Vegetable Mineral showcases the work of four of the Crafts Company's members - leatherworkers Jon and Bridget Stacey, basketmaker Mary Melling and photographer Bob Seymour. The exhibition opens to coincide with the Appledore Visual Arts Festival and reflects this year's theme - Earth.
Jon and Bridget work exclusively with hide. They make both modern and traditional leather items and add a contemporary feel through their use of colour and embossed pattern inspired by the flora of the North Devon countryside.
Mary exploits the subtle palette of different varieties of English willow to create unique baskets using a mixture of traditional European techniques. By 'thinking outside the basket' and experimenting with material, form and weave, she produces work that blurs the boundaries between art and craft.
Bob photographs the world around him, but in close-up detail that gives an abstract feel to his images. Subjects range from the waves and rocks of the wild Hartland Peninsula to the colourful houses of a Devon fishing village or the peeling paintwork on a trawler. His large-format prints are a powerful blend of intriguing pattern and perspective.
Each, in their different way, transforms their raw material, manipulates and distorts it to present us with their vision of what it could be. It's not what you see but the way that you look at it.....
